Abstract

Among carotid arteries (CA) pathologies there are few cases of their structural abnormalities -pathologic valves of common carotid arteries (CCA). During 2002 - 2009 over 14 thousand ultrasound studies of brachiocephalic arteries zone were performed. In this context blood flow disturbances due to local intimal dysplasia (hyperplasia) at the bifurcation zone of common carotid artery were revealed in 27 cases (81.5% men and 18.5% women). All the patients were symptomatic. Pathologic valves occurred in 0.19% cases of affected CCA. To date 15 patients with evident pathology out of 27 were operated on. Histological and morphological results showed that pathologic valves had the structure similar to that of vascular intima.
