Abstract

Reconstructive surgery for brachiocephalic arteries atherosclerotic lesions was performed in 89 patients: carotid endarterectomy in 73 (82.0%) patients and internal carotid artery resection with reimplantation into common carotid artery (when atherosclerotic lesion was associated with carotid tortuosity) in 16 (18.0%) patients. Clinical neurological and neuropsychological evaluation was performed using MMSE and FAB scores, clock drawing test, Tinetti score (Func tional Mobility Assessment in Elderly Patients Tinetti) as well as full spectrum of ultrasound methods of diagnostics, including functional loading tests, and perfusion Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography of the brain. Positive influence of reconstructive surgery on improvement of clinical neurologic and cognitive function was seen. Improvement of regional and hemispheres blood circulation as well as improvement of regional perfusion level was demonstrated in patients with critical carotid stenosis before surgery.
