Abstract

The low left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction is a risk factor for the unfavorable outcome of coronary bypass surgery. A key point in predicting outcomes in patients with ischemic heart disease and left ventricular dysfunction is the detection of a viable myocardium. At present, MRI, PET, SPECT and stress echocardiography with small doses of dobutamine are used to assess the viability of the myocardium. Speckle tracking echocardiography is a new promising ultrasound technique for quantifying the function of the myocardium, which makes it possible to identify a viable myocardium. Distinctive feature of speckle tracking echocardiography is simplicity in performance, accessibility, objectivity, short time of data analysis. The use of this technique in patients with ischemic heart disease and low LV ejection fraction can be of considerable help in deciding whether to coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
