Abstract

The presented review had no confirmation that prolonged double antithrombotic therapy will improve the prognosis and reduce restenosis after balloon angioplasty of the arteries below the knee. In patients with a high risk of bleeding or taking anticoagulant therapy, a short course (up to 2 weeks) with one antiplatelet agent may be sufficient. For all other patients a minimum for 1 month of double antithrombotic therapy (2 antiplatelet agents) is recommended, followed by lifelong therapy with one antiplatelet agent. The search for optimal antithrombotic therapy to prevent ischemic events without significantly increasing the risk of bleeding continues. Further research in pharmacotherapy is needed to improve our understanding and treatment outcomes.
