Abstract

Objective of the research – to evaluate the predisposition to the development of allergic reactions in cardiac surgery oatients in the perioperative period by measuring the frequency of elevated total IgE level.

Material and methods. The authors examined 43 patients who had undergone heart surgery.

Results. A high level of IgE was determined in 40% patients after surgery. A statistically significant moderate correlation between total IgE levels and eosinophil counts in blood was observed. In most patients, the increased level of IgE was determined in the 1st and 3rd postoperative days.

Conclusion. It is very important to know allergic history in cardiac surgery patients before surgical treatment. High IgE levels early in the postoperative period may lead to serious allergic reactions in these patients.
