Abstract

One of the main mechanisms of development and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD) is atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process characterized by intense immunological activity, the main target of which are arteries. Considering the important role of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease, pro-inflammatory markers reflecting the activity of the process are of key importance. According to the conducted studies, the prognostic role of the levels of fibrinogen, C-reactive protein, markers of the interleukin (IL-1, -3, -6, -8, -10), tumor necrosis factor, blood leukocytes, etc. with the risk of subsequent development of atherosclerosis of the arteries.

In recent years scientific studies have been published in global literature describing the so-called “novel” biomarkers of systemic inflammation: Systemic Inflammation Index (SII), Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI) and Aggregate Index of Systemic Inflammation (AISI). These are hematological indices based on the number of blood leukocytes and their subtypes. This article reviews recent studies assessing the role of these “novel” markers of systemic inflammation on the severity and course of CHD, as well as showing their prognostic significance in the development of adverse cardiovascular events in patients with stable CHD, with acute coronary syndrome and after surgical myocardial revascularization.
