Abstract

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an established significant risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Elevated plasma homocysteine levels are usually associated with genetic defects in enzymes involved in homocysteine metabolism.

The article provides an overview of studies regarding the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in atherogenesis and the development of cardiovascular complications, the effect of hyperhomocysteinemia on the results of myocardial revascularization and prognosis, and discusses genetic abnormalities leading to the development of hyperhomocysteinemia.

Further research into the pathogenesis of hyperhomocysteinemia in atherosclerotic diseases may be important, and the reduction of homocysteine may become a new potential “therapeutic target” to improve treatment outcomes.
