Abstract

Objective – establish the basic laws of helical blood flow in carotid bifurcation.

Material and methods. 50 carotid bifurcations in 38 healthy adult volunteers at the age 20.4 ± 1.9 years were examined. The blood flow was investigated by ultrasound systems Vivid 3 and Vivid 7 (GE, USA) using linear transducers at a frequency of 5–10 MHz. The direction and velocity parameters of helical blood flow were evaluated in the parent vessel (common carotid artery) and its branches (internal and external carotid arteries) using color duplex scanning.

Results. Frequency of registration of helical blood flow was 50% in the three segments of the bifurcations (parent vessel and both its branches), in other cases the helical blood flow was observed only in secondary branches. Rotation of the blood flow in right carotid arteries versus left carotid arteries was a different direction. Rotation of the blood flow in secondary branches of bifurcations was also different direction. We estimated velocity parameters of helical blood flow in common carotid and internal carotid arteries. Comparison of velocity parameters of helical blood flow between common carotid and internal carotid arteries showed that rotational velocity is higher in internal carotid artery.

Conclusion. Color duplex ultrasound allows registering helical blood flow in carotid bifurcation. We estimated basic laws of helical blood flow in parent vessel and secondary branches of the bifurcation.
