Abstract

Ability to visualise and quantify the changes in normal brain aging in vivo provides an opportunity to understand the underlying causes and location of this changes. In healthy adults, longitudinal changes in brain volume are not uniform. Although brain shrinkage is widespread, its magnitude varies across regions. The course of brain aging is predicated on multiple factors that are expressed to varying degrees in each individual. The brain shrinks with age evenly in reasonably healthy adults who showed no gross cognitive declines. The brain srankage is nonlinear and an individual's sex does not play a significant role in brain aging. Individual differences in the magnitude and variability of changes are significant and in certain critical regions are augmented by vascular risk factors.
