Abstract

Infections of vascular prostheses and patches are the most severe complication in vascular surgery and are largely associated with an unfavorable prognosis and high mortality. The incidence of the disease ranges from 1.5 to 6%, and depends on the location of the prosthesis, the pathogen, the time interval after surgery and is accompanied by high mortality (50–90%). Infection of arterial prostheses occurs in 4% of patients, aorta in 1–3%, accompanied by loss of limbs and high mortality (more than 20%). Timely diagnosis of infection is crucial in the treatment and management of the patient. To date, there are no standardized diagnostic algorithms and a single solution for diagnostic tactics in such patients.

This article discusses in detail the various diagnostic methods used to detect infection of prostheses and patches, as well as examines the issues that arise for doctors when planning diagnostic methods that are most suitable for examining patients.
