Abstract

Endovascular closure of the left atrial appendage is an emerging treatment method to prevent embolic complications in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Over the past twenty years, many devices have been developed to close the appendage of the left atrium. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography is used to evaluate the anatomy of the left atrial appendage and its suitability for endovascular closure, select the type and size of the closure device and guide the implantation procedure of the device in combination with fluoroscopy. In addition, two- dimensional and three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of device implantation in the postoperative period. The knowledge currently available for occluders implantation with their specific characteristics is essential for choosing the appropriate device for a given patient with a specific anatomy of the left atrial appendage. We present currently available devices for closing the left atrial appendage and echocardiographic imaging approaches for evaluating the left atrial appendage before, on time and after closure.
