Abstract

This review presents the modern aspects of the etiology and pathogenesis of pathological tortuosity of the internal carotid artery (ICA). It covers the main types of surgical correction of pathological tortuosity, compared the efficacy and safety techniques with each other and with respect to the use of antiplatelet therapy drug. The focus is on the definition of the indications for surgical intervention, taking into account the presence or absence of neurological symptoms, anatomical and functional characteristics of pathological changes of ICA segments. The authors, based on the analysis of literature claim that the surgical treatment of pathological tortuosity of the internal carotid artery is safe and effective and can achieve long-term effect on the prevention of the symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
