Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with a progressive course of atherosclerosis in elderly patients are aggravated by agerelated conditions, one of which is sarcopenia – a progressive decrease in the quantity and quality of striated muscles. The study of sarcopenia in patients with CVD causes a discussion in the scientific community regarding the general pathogenesis of atherosclerotic lesions and progressive loss of muscle mass from the position of concomitant pathology. This review analyzes the main modifiable risk factors for atherosclerosis and sarcopenia from in terms of pathophysiological mechanisms of their influence on the arterial bed and muscle tissue. We reviewed historical aspects and modern research devoted to the study of common links of atherogenesis and proteolysis. It is established that the risk factors considered in this review, such as smoking, obesity, impaired carbohydrate metabolism, and arterial hypertension, certainly have independent pathogenetic ways of implementing adverse effects, but the only link for them is the inflammatory response that determining the mutual potentiation and comorbidity of sarcopenia and atherosclerosis.
